Purpose:
Heavy metals like lead are one class of toxic agents that can cause optic neuropathy.
Methods:
We report a 42-year-old male who, due to lead poisoning, had been treated with lead chelators.
Results:
He had gradually developed blurred vision in both eyes over 40 days. He had ataxia and paresthesia and a toxic level of serum lead. He had decreased visual acuity in both eyes which involved color vision. Humphrey’s Visual Fields test revealed a double arcuate scotoma with enlargement of the blind spot. In funduscopy he was found to have bilateral optic disc edema which was confirmed by optical coherence tomography and fluorescein angiography.
Conclusion:
This is the first case reported with these specific impairments.
